Respiratory illnesses hit two local hospitals

Respiratory illnesses continue to gallop across the region, and they’re affecting two of the three hospitals operated by the MICs Health Care Group.

CEO Paul Chatelain says a respiratory outbreak was declared Monday at Bingham Memorial Hospital in Matheson, which also houses the Rosedale long-term care centre. Patients and residents are restricted to one visitor at a time, and you have to wear a mask.

“Anson General Hospital in Iroquois Falls is in a suspected respiratory outbreak,” Chatelain states. “It’s not declared, so there’s no restriction on visitors, but we’ll continue with universal masking for anybody walking into the hospital.”

Chatelain says neither emergency department is affected, so if you’re hurt or really sick, go to them.

“If it’s non-urgent cases, I might want to say be prepared for a little bit longer waits because it’s busier now this time of year, and certainly with the respiratory illnesses going around. So you may have to wait a little bit longer if it’s non-urgent.”

Chatelain says mandatory hand sanitization is also in effect, and asks you to read and obey the signs posted at the doors of both hospitals.
