Cochrane mayor rejects union’s claims of privatization of water, daycare services

Cochrane mayor Peter Politis says the union representing municipal workers is trying to create hysteria by making false claims about restructuring.

On social media, CUPE Ontario says Politis is taking out his frustration from a 2023 strike, by privatizing water distribution and the municipal daycare centre.  It calls that “disastrous – maybe even dangerous”.

Politis says the town is conducting a provincially-mandated review to find efficiencies and the most effective way to provide both services.

“Not only in a cost-effective manner,” he tells My Cochrane Now Dot Com, “but quite frankly, in the most sustainable manner, because these are two critically important essential services.”

Politis adds that selling a municipal service for profit is illegal. What is happening, he says, is a gathering of data to ensure they’re sustainable either through existing staff, contractors, or a combination of both.

“If the in-house workforce is in fact the best possible way to provide the service in the most cost-effective manner, in the safest and most risk-free environment, that’s going to show through the research and we’re just going to reinforce that.”
