Cochrane history: Amalgamation ordered

In our Cochrane history feature, we’ve been back in 1999, following the progress towards amalgamation.

This week, from the Cochrane Times of November 26th of that year, comes word that the province approved the restructuring proposal of the Town of Cochrane, Glackmeyer Township and the unorganized township of Lamarche.

It would take effect on January 1st, 2000.  The first year was to be spent in transition, led by Cochrane Mayor Donald Génier, with Glackmeyer Reeve Rhéal Cousineau as his deputy, along with both councils.  Lamarche was to have one rep at the table.

Thanks, as always, to the Cochrane Public Library for allowing us to use its archives as the basis of our history feature.
