You see people wearing poppies everywhere this time of year. And there is protocol surrounding them.
Legion Branch 70 Iroquois Falls president Don Beagan says a poppy should be pinned as close to your heart as possible. He accepts them on hats, too, saying the important thing is honouring military veterans.
You should wear a poppy from the last Friday in October until Remembrance Day. And after that?
“Well, you can put them in the drawer,” Beagan says, “put them away, save them for another year, or you can dispose of them in the garbage.”
Poppies are now biodegradable. Beagan says if they’re wet, they break down in a year.
.This Saturday around Iroquois Falls, Legionnaires and Air Cadets will be out selling poppies.
Beagan says the money is used to support veteran and them families. It goes to hospitals and seniors’ homes, and the charitable foundation at the Legion Ontario Command.
“Towards bursaries; towards student education,” he outlines. “Wherever we can support veterans and their families, we will do it.”
