It has been 25 years since worries about what might happen when the calendar rolled over to the year two-thousand. That’s the topic for this week’s Cochrane history feature.
In the October 22nd, 1999 issue of the Cochrane Times was a report about meeting of a Y2K committee composed of various agencies.
The main concern of the 15 committee members was a suitable evacuation centre, should the power fail for any length of time. Public Utilities Commission manager Peter Murray said he was 99% sure the electricity would not go off.
The OPP said their building was equipped with a generator, so would have electricity and heat. But it shared concerns about an evacuation centre and what to do with people during an extended blackout.
Thanks to the Cochrane Public Library for its contribution towards our weekly history festure.
