The president of the Barbers Bay Ratepayers Association says a letter writing campaign to provincial transportation minister Prabmeet Sarkaria will, if nothing else, make him aware of the deteriorating condition of Municipal Rd.
J-P Murray has lived just off Finn Rd. for more than three years. He says as Municipal Road deteriorates; the shoulders are collapsing. And he says the road is used by a lot more than local traffic.
“It’s widely used currently on the (Frederickhouse) dam project; it’s widely used for forestry; there’s a lot of traffic from Hwy. 11 coming into Timmins for work and etc.,” Murray remarks. “No way is it just local traffic.”
Murray hopes a solution is found before the worst case scenario happens. It has Iroquois Falls and Timmins – which share the road – threatening to turn it into a gravel road.
From a Timmins standpoint, Murray says Municipal Road isn’t the only city road that’s in bad shape.
“Frederickhouse Rd. needs help, Ice Chest Rd. needs, help; Carrigan (Rd.),” he lists. “I don’t think this problem is just associated to Municipal Rd. I think it’s a problem the city’s going to have to face with a lot of roads, and that’s just on the east end.”
Iroquois Falls town hall and Timmins city hall both want the province to reverse the downloading that happened about 25 years ago and bring it up to safety standards.
