Cochrane history: Early September, 1999

The first week of September in 1999 was a newsy one, proven by the front page of the Cochrane Times, as we take our weekly look at local history.

That’s back when a copy of the paper would put you back 75 cents.

That front page mentioned the possibility of a new Tembec mill in either Cochrane, Iroquois Falls or Timmins, producing smaller pieces of lumber from lower grade larger pieces.

It also had details of Giant Tiger moving up Sixth Avenue, into the former Carriere Supermarket; Sheila Girard starting her career as a hairstylist; and Elwood Beauchamp taking up golf as he retired from the OPP.

Thanks to the Cochrane Public Library for supplying our history feature from its archives.
