Cochrane history: Town council greenlights a new public library in 1999

In Cochrane history, it was 25 years ago this week that town council gave the go-ahead to build a new public library across the street from Town Hall on Fourth Avenue.

It’s reported in the Cochrane Times issue of August 20th, 1999.

Cochrane and Glackmeyer Township councils each applied to the Northern Ontario Heritage  Fund for $100,000 towards the cost.

Head librarian Audrey Andrews said she looked forward to the new building and its single storey, making it accessible to all.  At the time, the library was inaccessible because of the stairs to get to the door, and because it had two floors.

The first attempt at a library was in 1917. It became an organized facility in 1921 and circulated more than 14-hundred books in its first year.

Thanks to the library for the use of its archives every week.

On the same page of the Times, what was showing at the Empire Theatre that week: Wild Wild West starring Will Smith, Kevin Kline and Salma Hayek.
