Cochrane history: Stewart wins federal vote

We go back exactly 50 years today for our weekly Cochrane history feature.

On July 8th, 1974, Liberal MP Ralph Stewart was re-elected in the federal vote that gave Pierre Elliott Trudeau a majority government in the Commons.

Stewart was first elected in 1968 and was the MP until March, 1979.

Shortly before the 1979 election, he crossed the floor to the Progressive Conservative party, which wouldn’t nominate him to carry its banner into the election.

Thanks to the Cochrane Public Library for supplying its archive copy of the July 11th, 1974 edition of the Northland Post, on which this instalment of our history feature is based.
