Cochrane history, 1937: Swimming Club and a visit from the Toronto Board of Trade

Back to June, 1937 this week, for our regular feature on Cochrane history.

Looking through the pages of the Northland Post, library archivist Ardis Proulx-Chedore reads that the swimming club was beginning a new season at the Town Pool.

“Mr. Crosby, who was director in charge last year, again has taken over the instruction, and classes are bigger than ever. Swim meets will be held on Thursday evenings at 7 o’clock in the future.”

The story listed all the winners of the swimming and diving competitions that week.

BUSINESS DELEGATION EXPECTED

Also in June was an impending visit by 100-person delegation from the Toronto Board of Trade. As Proulx-Chedore reads, it’s led by president J.J. Gibbons, who also headed his own advertising agency.

The group was expected in early evening, arriving by train.

“It is likely that while here, the members of the delegation will be taken by cars around town and into the surrounding country in the two or three hours of remaining daylight.”

Our usual thanks go to the Cochrane Public Library and its archive department for help with our feature.
