Lake Commando is the hottest place for snowmobile oval racing this Saturday and Sunday. In conjunction with the Ontario Snowmobile Oval Racing Association, the Cochrane Classic Vintage Riders are putting on the event.
It’s the first time since 2020 – its second year – that the Vintage Riders have been able to stage the races. Executive member Dan Girard says that time, it had almost as many racers as Eganville had over a period of almost 50 years.
“This year, Eganville unfortunately had to cancel,” Girard notes. “So Cochrane will be hosting the largest snowmobile ice oval race in Ontario this year.”
Pro driver Sabrina Blanchette of Drummondville, Québec is expected to be among the racers. Girard also expects several from the U.S. and all over Ontario.
“We’re getting all kinds of messages,” Girard reports. “They haven’t been able to race all of last year and then this year, they’ve only put in I think it was three races, maybe four. We’re hearing a lot of feedback that they can’t wait to get here to put their sleds on the ice.”
The oval is near the Commando Pavilion. Spectators are welcome for $10.00 a day; $25.00 for a family of four.
