As Halloween approaches, our look back at Cochrane history takes us to 1979.
A front page story in the Northland Post was all about a big party on the big night, at the Tim Horton Arena. Cochrane Public Library archivist Ardis Proulx-Chedore reads from the article that it was an event to mark the International Year of the Child.
“But if Councillor Juli Karam, who pressed for the party, gets her way, the Halloween party won’t be for this year only, it will become an annual event to keep young children off the streets of Cochrane on this dangerous night.”
Coun. Karam said there were 1,258 elementary school kids eligible to go to the party.
“Already, Councillor Karam has arranged for free ice time between 7 and 9 p.m. on Halloween and has arranged with council for prizes of $25, $15 and $10 for the best costumes in the costume judging competition.”
