You are being reminded to lock it or lose it.
Police say they are seeing an increase in the number of thefts from cars, sheds and houses. Timmins Police Service Communications Coordinator Marc Depatie says in June, police received a 77 calls about smaller thefts including wallets and phones taken from vehicles and stolen bikes.
Depatie says these thefts are easily avoidable. He says you should remember to:
- lock all your car doors, even if you are parked for just a moment
- don’t keep any valuables in the car or in sight
- lock your house, garage and sheds
- use curtains and block your windows so people can’t see in
- have proper lighting or motion lighting outside your house
- leave your lights or the radio on when you aren’t home
- keep all lawn mowers, snow blowers, barbecues and bicycles locked in a garage or shedÂ
Depatie says if you are going on vacation, you should have someone you trust check on your house, mow your lawn and collect your mail to make it look like you are home. He says thieves typically go for the easiest targets they can find. He says the more you can do to deter them, the better.
