Timiskaming-Cochrane MPP John Vanthof says there’s nothing wrong with taking on debt as long as it helps the economy grow.
Vanthof says the problem the Liberals created by adding to the debt is some of that money was wasted on programs.
He says the NDP is not afraid to have a deficit budget or to add more debt as long as the money is spent wisely.
Vanthof says a good example of Liberal mismanagement is the Liberals selling Hydro One to balance their budget.
But he says in the process they gave up billions of dollars in dividends they got from Hydro One and that’s money that could have gone towards programs.
Vanthof says the Tories did much the same thing under Mike Harris.
He says when the NDP was in power during the 1990s and built the 407, it generated revenue for the province.
However he says when Harris became Premier he sold the 407 and in the process gave up millions of future dollars.
Vanthof says when the NDP take on debt, they make sure it’s not wasted on programs and there’s a return on the investment.
