Any donation made in the past 20 years to a Canadian politician will now be public knowledge.
A new database titled ‘Follow the Money’ will now include over six million recorded political donations that date back to the year 2000.
Timmins-James Bay MPP Gilles Bisson says with all politicians now being publicly financed, this is just another step in creating more transparency to the process.
Bisson says each riding has $25,000 that will be split amongst the candidates based upon the percentage of votes obtained from the previous election.
He says going forward; a majority of financing for politicians like himself will now be based off their cut of the quarter million, making the election outcomes that much more important.
The government website Follow the Money will keep a track on all donations coming in for candidates leading up to the June provincial election and next year’s federal election.
