Public board may have to consolidate more schools

The District School Board of Ontario North East may be faced with closing more schools as it goes through another consolidation process.  Board chairman Doug Shearer says that scenario is the result of the province not providing enough money to repair and maintain existing schools.  Shearer says the board is tens of millions of dollars behind in repair and maintenance work.  He says with a Ministry of Education that won`t commit to new schools and with no change expected with the funding formula, more consolidations may be the board`s only alternative.   Shearer says although the current board is more than half way through its mandate, he expects trustees to close more schools before their term ends and he also expects more consolidations when a new board is elected in 2018.
