Last week it was police in Sudbury warning northerners about crooked canvassers and now Timmins police are doing the same thing. Timmins police say there are people going door-to-door representing fake charities. Police spokesman Marc Depatie has some advice to overcome this. He says legitimate charities almost always occupy real estate. If you have never heard of the charity, or if they don’t have a local office, don’t donate. Depatie says scammers pocket the money you give them and the charity they claim to represent never receives your donation.
