Elsewhere Nashville beat Ottawa 5-1, Los Angeles doubled Edmonton 4-2, Vancouver needed overtime for a 3-2 win over Arizona and Philadelphia skated to a 5-2 victory over Winnipeg.

In the NFL Thursday nighter the Carolina Panthers hung on to beat the New Orleans Saints 23-20. Both teams are now 4-6 and tied for third in the NFC South.

The LA Angels’ Mike Trout won the AL MVP award yesterday for the second time in three years, and Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant was voted NL MVP.
