SRF volunteer firefighters provide Halloween safety tips

With Halloween only a few weeks away volunteer firefighters in Smooth Rock Falls are providing parents with some safety tips.

They say when choosing a costume stay away from anything that might have long trailing fabric. The Fire Department says residents should look for costumes and masks that are flame-resistant and say face paint is better than a mask which could potentially restrict vision and breathing. Firefighters say the best costumes are the ones that are brightly covered, flame-resistant and reflective.

Ontario’s Association of Fire Chiefs say parents should provide children with flashlights or glow sticks to carry around as a part of their costume. It’s safest for kids who are out trick-or-treating to walk along one side of the road first then the other to avoid zig-zagging across the street. Kids should always wait until they are home to have any candy and parents should throw out anything that might be opened or unwrapped.

When it comes to decorating your house it’s safer to use a flashlight or battery powered candle inside pumpkins. Firefighters say to keep lit jack-o-lanterns away from anything that could catch fire and to never leave the candles burning.

Drivers are also reminded to use extra caution on the roads that night. If you are driving on Halloween, be aware of children, drive slowly and enter and exit driveways with extreme caution.

The Smooth Rock Falls Fire Department wants to ensure all children are safe this coming Halloween. They will be having a Halloween Costume Contest from 4:00pm to 7:00pm with prizes for best costume.
