Minimum wage is going up in the province as of October 1st. Right now minimum wage is $11.25 an hour or $10.55 for students. At the start of next month those numbers will go up to $11.40 and $10.70. Timmins-James Bay MPP Gilles Bisson says that the province raising minimum wage is a step in the right direction.  Bisson says the people who spend money locally are the ones who aren’t making the big bucks. He says that minimum wage going up in the province will have a positive economic impact.  However, the Fraser Institute has released a statement critiquing the move on the grounds that it will hurt low-income workers as employers are forced to reduce their hours or lay them off.  The Fraser Institute opposes minimum wage laws on the grounds that they drive costs up and do nothing to help the poorest Canadians.
