A bill from Timmins-James Bay MPP Gilles Bisson is before Queen’s Park for the creation of aboriginal school boards. The Educational Amendment Act would essentially give First Nations’ communities the ability to negotiate with the province and form regional school boards. Bisson is hoping the bill will help the current plight of on-reserve schools which lack both resources and funding. He says the current formula of one-to- one funding for each school is flawed. Bisson says education has a major impact, both economically and socially, this bill could make aboriginal communities better equipped to deal with both.
