PREPARING FOR THE FLOOD

The town of Kapuskasing is now in its final stages of preparations to begin accepting evacuees from Kashechewan.  Evacuation Coordinator Gerry Demeules says the weather has been cooperative this year, staying cold for longer.  He says it was even snowing in the remote James Bay community yesterday.  Demeules says one of the tools used to determine the threat of flooding to the community is an MNR monitoring station on Hat Island which is about 100 kilometres away from Kashechewan.  He says once the community decides to declare a state of emergency, the evacuation will begin.  Demeules says it’s a collaborative process, taking into account actual scientific data and the veterency of elders from Kashechewan who have experienced the flooding for decades.
