Discovery CEO tells business audience of spending and construction plans

All the work that has been poured into mining in the area and all the work to come… was covered at lunch Thursday by Discovery mining president Tony Makuch.

He presented a State of Mining address to Chamber of Commerce members and many others.

Makuch said it all means a lot of jobs.

“We’re talking about $5-billion in spending here over the next five to six years,” he stated. “We’re talking about not only keeping jobs at 2,500 people but creating hundreds of more new jobs.”

Makuch – a local boy – added that there will be even more jobs during construction of the various projects. He says more people will need to be brought in.

Makuch says investments include recreation facilities to add to life away from the job for Discovery workers.

During his presentation, he mentioned one in Iroquois Falls. He said it recognizes where Discovery operations draw workers from.

“Providing facilities to help again for people to live there and do well. Thank you for bringing it up to us and identifying something that we can at least try to help to be part of the community.”

Iroquois Falls mayor Tory Delaurier says what he calls a legacy project is a splash pad and a new park. He expects construction to begin next month.
