Cochrane history: School enrolment numbers in 1956

School enrolment numbers in Cochrane reached an all-time high in September, 1956.

That’s the period we’re going to spend a few weeks in for our local history feature.

The front page of the Northland Post on September 6th said that the 1,049 students at all schools in town topped the previous record set the year before.

And after being outnumbered by girls for several years, high school boys pulled even at 84 each.

Also reported is Morris Wernick coming from England to teach English at the high school and Alex Kirkbride to teach shop classes.

Thanks to the Cochrane Public Library for the ongoing use of its archives.
