Northern College is getting $10.7-million to attract students into programs that train them for jobs being created in the north.
Announcing the funding at the college’s main campus in Timmins, MPP and northern economic development and growth minister George Pirie says it’s part of a $6.4-billion fund from a new long-term funding model for post-secondary education.
“Which will see universities, colleges and Indigenous institutions focused on delivering programs that align with student and labour market demands supported by increased, predictable funding,” Pirie says.
By offering more courses to train students in jobs for which there’s demand, he adds, they’ll have successful careers while also supporting world-class research.
“Moving faster will contribute to our shared goal of taking advantage of more opportunities and continue to keep our Northern economy strong. And for our Northern economy to be strong, Northern College has to be strong.”
Pirie adds that with the funding, students will be able to participate in world-class research at colleges and universities.
