It’s Polar Bear Week around the world, and the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat is celebrating it with activities every day until Saturday.
That’s the day that admission is only a toonie – remember, there’s a polar bear on the toonie –and it gets you admission to the habitat, heritage village and snowmobile museum.
Habitat manager Amy Baxendell says behind-the-scenes tours are available for $10.00. You’ll see where the big animals sleep, the crate where veterinary work is performed and where their food is made. She says there are piles of pumpkins.
“We have so many pumpkins right now — we’re so grateful to everyone for all the pumpkins – some of the research that we do; the bears’ toy room. So it’s a lot of fun. You’ll be able to see a lot of different things,” Baxendell outlines.
“People can head to our social media or website to see the other events that we have going,” she continues. “We did just do a lunch with Ganuk. So you’ll be able see that. It was livestreamed on our Facebook and we have events happening for the rest of the week as well.”
Polar Bear Week is a worldwide event organized by the Churchill, Manitoba based Polar Bears International. It’s the first week of November, when bears usually gather on the shores of James and Hudson Bay to begin the hunt on the sea ice.
