ATV permit issue brings provincial parties together

It’s not often that a New Democrat at Queen’s Park compliments a Conservative and supports something they’re trying to do.  It takes all-terrain vehicle trail permits for Cochrane-Timiskaming MPP John Vanthof to do that.

Government House Leader Steve Clark has moved to institute one permit for the entire province, instead of the confusing patchwork now in place.

Vanthof says everyone in the House is going to work together to make it work.

“I know what the snowmobile industry does for our area, and I know what the ATV people are already doing,” he remarks. “Together, we can do so much more.”

Snowmobile clubs already have a one permit, one province system. Vanthof says the ATV version of that isn’t law yet, but Clark’s motion is a first step.

He adds that party agreement hardly ever happens.

“It’s part of our lives in Northern Ontario and it could be so great if many more people experienced what we experience on a daily basis.”

Currently, Ontario is the only  province without a single permit ATV system.

There are more than 300,000 insured ATVs  in Ontario.
