Mayor questions ministry order about water system, saying town being proactive

Cochrane mayor Peter Politis wants to make one thing clear regarding an environment ministry order concerning the water system. He says the town is completely compliant, there’s no emergency or risk, and the operation is fully staffed.

Politis says the order is a result of the town being concerned about future staffing levels and having the workers to fill them.

“Receiving the order from the province was surprising to us,” the mayor tells My Cochrane Now Dot Com, “and I to this point maintain I don’t think it’s the appropriate reaction considering that it’s not something that the province has dug up that’s illegal on the town’s part or what have you, we were being proactive.”

Politis says the municipality, while looking at operational efficiencies across all its services, asked the ministry for guidance on how to staff the system. But he reierates it’s fully staffed right now.

“Are we still looking for staff? Yes, of course. We’re always looking for the longer term solution which may involve expanding the town approach or it may involve taking another approach or a hybrid of the two involved. We’re just not sure at this point.”

One thing Politis is sure of is that any moves will be done in the best interests of the public.
