This week’s local history feature goes back to the Cochrane Times of June 17th, 1995, beginning with a layoff in the resources sector.
On the front page is a report about Norbord shutting down its sawmill and planer for an anticipated three months, affecting more than 100 jobs.
It was blamed on high supply and low demand for lumber caused by a low number of homes being built.
That same front page carried a report about Iroquois Falls Councillor Danny McIntyre pitching the Cochrane-Temiskaming Recycling Association to Cochrane council. He was chair of the association and said mandatory membership affected only three municipalities in the region: Hearst, Kap and Iroquois Falls, because of their population size of over 5,000. It was voluntary for the other 12.
