Cochrane history: Town Council in 2000 commits money towards the ‘Polar Bear Orphanage’

This week in Cochrane history from the year 2000, a 7-6 vote at town council to put up money to help establish what was then referred to as the Polar Bear Orphanage.

The Cochrane Times reported in its May 26th edition that council committed $200,000 towards the project.

Administration chair Coun. Denis Clement was concerned that a chunk of cash that size might come at the expense of other municipal spending.

Coun. Jack Kerr said the project was at the stage of asking the Northern Ontario Heritage Foundation for funds, and that required a commitment from Town Hall.
