Thirty years ago, Cochrane residents were awaiting construction of a new entrance to town. That’s part of this week’s local history feature.
The April 15th, 1995 issue of the Cochrane Times carried a report about the town getting $272,000 form the province to develop the entrance via Western Avenue from Hwy. 11 to Clute Rd.
The municipality had been trying for 30 years to get a secondary route as a safe alternative when traffic was backed up at the rail crossing on Third Ave. while a train went by.
That same issue of the paper reported on town council ending the practice of the fire department responding to calls outside municipal limits.
Mayor David Hughes said people were critical of a call to what was then New Post, putting the entire town at risk if a major fire broke out during that time.
