A Northern Ontario family wants a maximum snowmobile speed of 80 kilometres per hour on frozen lakes and rivers. The call follows the death of a French River woman who was hit by a speeding snowmobile while she was near an ice-fishing hut earlier this month. The operator of the sled also died. The victim’s family also wants sleds to slow down to 20km/h when they’re within 15 meters of people engaged in activities like ice-fishing. The family will release a petition as soon as their MPP, John Vanthof of Timiskaming-Cochrane, looks at the wording.
