A one-time mayor and two-term Timmins city councillor is the federal Liberal party candidate in the April 28th election.
Steve Black was mayor between 2014 and 2018, and was elected councillor in 2022. He announced his candidacy on social media Saturday night.
A mining engineer by trade, he’s facing retired resources executive Gaétan Malette for the Conservatives, and former Moonbeam mayor Nicole Fortier Lévesque for the NDP.
Whoever wins will be a new MP. Incumbent New Democrat Charlie Angus is retiring. He’s become the self-proclaimed leader of the Canadian resistance against U.S. President Donald Trump, his tariffs and threat to make Canada the 51st state.
Black ran against Angus in 2021, placing third.
