Oval Races return to Cochrane March 8-9 on Lake Commando

Oval racing is returning to Lake Commando in Cochrane next weekend. The Vintage Riders Snowmobile Club is presenting Ontario Snowmobile Oval Races on Saturday and Sunday March 8th, and 9th with as many as 60 competitors from as far away as Wisconsin taking part. Club Executive member

Dan Girard says everything is looking good for the races after taking last year off because of poor track conditions on the lake.

“We are able to secure our track building contractor. Lake Commando right now looks really good,” he said. “It’s been packed for the carnival, and it was packed for the drag races there’s no slush which is a big thing right now and there is sufficient amount of ice to build a track.”

Girard says this event is big for the community.

“The greatest thing is that these are all people coming and generally not just the racer himself, right they have a pit crew and a lot of it – it’s a family thing so you are looking at possibly 150 to 200 maybe even more people,” he said.

The OSOR Races have about $30,000 in prize money and Girard hinted Cochrane will probably be closer to $40,000.

He adds they also get great fans support with people coming out from across the region to watch the action. Tickets are $10 per person or $25 for a family of four.

There will be a banquet on Saturday night where the public is invited out to mingle with the racers and learn more.
