Town of Cochrane looking at solar panels for Event Centre

The Town of Cochrane is reviewing a proposal from Taykwa Tagamou First Nation and Jazz Solar Solutions to install solar panels at the Tim Horton Events Centre.

Under the plan, the panels could save the town 15 per cent electricity costs. Mayor Peter Politis says one option could see Taykwa Tagamou lease space and the town retains all revenue or the other offers joint agreement and the profits shared.

“The revenues generated are in a provincial program so it’s not actual cash that you are getting into your hands but credits on the electricity you are going to be using,” he said. “So you can imagine a facility that large will consume a lot of power and by consuming a lot of power we have an opportunity to offset that.”

Politis says he liked the presentation that was made at council, and now it’s gone back for further study. A decision could be made near budget time.

“To identify whether the structure is sound enough to uphold that at the event centre and to identify the actual numbers,” he said. “To get us out of the cloud of context and start getting into numbers and dynamics.”
