The Mayor of Kapuskasing says the announcement of Infracon Construction’s purchase of the former phosphate mine west of the community is great for the region. Dave Plourde says its welcomed news after General Motors’ decision to close the cold weather test facility back in the fall.
“And I think going forward we are going to see a lot more of this,” he said. “I mean there are mining stakes all around Kapuskasing and all across the north. And I think Northern Ontario is well poised to have a bright future.”
He adds that the town has yet to reach out to Infracon and Kap Minerals officials.
“Any news like this is great, certainly but we will be reaching out in early this January to speak to the people involved to see what the municipality and the region can do for them,” he said.
He says the town will benefit from the nearly 100 jobs created but won’t from the tax base of the mine because it’s outside the town’s jurisdiction.
