Cochrane history: January, 2000 brings amalgamated council into being

The inauguration of a new council for a newly constituted Town of Cochrane took place 25 years ago this week. It’s the topic for this week’s local history feature.

The expanded council took Lamarche and Fournier township councils under the Cochrane banner, the final step in amalgamation.

Justice of the Peace Doris Boyuk swore in the council, headed by Mayor Donald Génier.

Among the many housekeeping issues handled was setting the mayor’s annual honorarium at $9,640.00; Deputy Mayor Rhéal Cousineau’s at $8,682.15 and councillors at $5,625.00.

Also on the front page of the Times that week was a photo of the first baby born in Cochrane that year. Amber Lyne Ouellette made her début on January 11th, weighing eight pounds and two ounces.

The Cochrane Public Library provides the material for our history feature.

The first baby born in Cochrane in 2000 was Amber Lyne Ouelette. She is shown with Dad Sebastien and Mom Chantal.
