General Motors announces permanent closure of cold weather test facility in Kapuskasing

This region took an economic direct hit late Friday afternoon.

General Motors announced it was permanently closing its cold weather test facility in Kapuskasing after being part of the community for over 50 years. Three full-time employees and up to 30 seasonal were told of the closure via text message or email, according to longtime worker Frank Siebert.

In a post on social media, he said that no reason was given for the closure and added that it’s a sad time for those who depended on those jobs.

In an email to Moose FM news late Sunday night, General Motors officials say the decision was made to clear up redundancies within the company.

Spokesperson Jennifer Wright says GM thanks everyone for their great work in Kap over many decades. She adds that through continuous improvement our cold weather testing capability has dramatically improved and evolved and issues can now be root caused at the supplier and development sage, therefore testing on full vehicles onsite has become redundant.
