There was a lot of speculation all month that September must have been warmer than normal. Environment Canada meteorologist Steven Flisfeder confirms that.
Based on figures from the weather station at the Timmins Airport, he says the average maximum daily temperature last month was 22.5°..
“The average daytime max should be about 17.8, so four to five degrees warmer for the daytime max,” he explains.
The average overnight low was 7.5.
“For September,” says Flisfeder, “it should be about 5.5. So when all things are taken into consideration, it was definitely warmer than normal this year.”
There is no single reason. Flisfeder says global climate change is definitely a factor… as is the fact that this is a transitioning La Niña year.
“There are some times where that can help to inhibit the amount of cloud cover, inhibit precipitation which can lead to warmer overall days.”
Speaking of precipitation, we got a near normal amount of rain last month: 85.2 mm, compared to the yearly average of 81.7 mm.
