Cochrane history: Polar Bear Express entertainer marks 500th trip

This week, our Cochrane history feature has us climbing aboard the Polar Bear Express passenger train to Moosonee and meeting the piano player and singer in the entertainment car.

The August 27th, 1999 issue of The Cochrane Times had the story of Carrie Clermont marking her five-hundredth trip up to James Bay and back. The 38-year-old had been doing it every summer since 1986.

She said the gig was a lot fun, making it difficult to pick one highlight.  But she did talk about a conga line going through the car one time.

In the winter, Clermont worked at a similar job for Commodore Cruise Lines out of New York.

Thanks, as always, to the Cochrane Public Library for sharing its archives.
