Cochrane history 1944: Province puts up money for potato warehouse

Cochrane is known for high-quality potatoes.  That goes back at least 80 years, and is the topic of this week’s local history feature.

The August 31st, 1944 issue of the Northland Post has a story about the provincial agriculture department deciding not to build a potato warehouse in Cochrane, instead putting up as much as 15-thousand dollars for the District Producers’ Co-Operative to do it.

In making the announcement, agriculture minister Tom “The Colonel” Kennedy remarked that there’s no soil finer for potatoes than the land around Cochrane.  He said the size and quality could not be surpassed.

The minister added that heated storage was needed so that the crops wouldn’t freeze in the winter when it hits 40 below.

The Cochrane Public Library’s archives make our history feature possible every week.
