Cochrane history: 1994 talk of amalgamation

Our trip back in time for this week’s Cochrane history feature takes us to the August 20th, 1994 issue of The Cochrane Times, and the re-kindling of talk of municipal amalgamation.

The story says Cochrane mayor David Hughes was looking for input from the unorganized townships of Hanna, Lamarche and Fournier, about what people there would want, if they were to merge with the town.

Mayor Hughes said a steering committee on the matter was looking at “any reasonable grounds to put everything under one umbrella”.

He said it was not an aggressive move, but it was time to look at it.  Among the advantages he could see for all four communities was stronger borrowing power and more capital for infrastructure.

Thanks to the Cochrane Public Library for sharing its archives with us for our weekly feature.
