Cochrane history: Train service affected by visit to Canada of Pope John Paul II

Pope John Paul II did not come to Cochrane when he visited Canada in September, 1984, but there is a connection, as we examine in our weekly history feature.

The Cochrane Times of July 11th, 1984 carries an ad from Ontario Northland. It says that because of increased demand on its nighttime passenger train service to Toronto, all tickets would be on a reservation basis between September 13th and 17th.

It also says tickets would have to be bought when reservations were made.

On the itinerary for the visit of His Holiness were Midland, Ottawa and Toronto, where he conducted mass at Downsview Park.
