Break-in and vandalism at Scout Hall

Not even the Scouts could be prepared for what happened at their hall in Cochrane.

Last Thursday, volunteer and property committee member Crystal Burkholder discovered it was broken into and vandalized.  Doors had been ripped off storage cupboards in the main hall, and the culprits got into the kitchen through the service window.

“And then they had taken some sharp knives out of the kitchen and then kind of stabbed them into the walls,” says Burkholder, “threw them around the hall, popped some of the sports balls that had we in the cupboards.”

Burkholder says the OPP took some evidence for fingerprints and possibly DNA, as they investigate. She hopes insurance will cover at least some of the damage.

“We were not expecting to have to deal with a break-in. The building has been there for almost 40 years and I think maybe only like one other break-in in the past.”

Some people have already donated towards the clean-up.  Pending what the insurance company does, Burkholder says active fundraising might begin next month.
