It’s been a while since a summer ball hockey program was offered on the floor of the arena in Iroquois Falls – since the early 2000s. It’s back this year.
Recreation facilities manager Steve Bélanger says it’s set up so as not to compete for players with minor baseball and soccer.
“We’re going to let our baseball program finish at the end of June, and then we’re going to run a little five-week program here,” he says, “just to try to get some sticks, some balls on the icel, and maybe it’s an opportunityfor some kids to get a little bit of conditioning in before (ice hockey) tryouts start.”
Games will be played on all five Wednesday nights in July. Bélanger says two games will be played at a time.
“If you ever played ball hockey on a 200-foot surface, it is a lot of running. There’s no gliding in ball hockey,” Bélanger remarks. “We’ll be splitting the ice in half. We’re fortunate that we have a board system that allows us to do so.”
There’s no body contact and helmets and gloves are mandatory. Registration is $25.00 and you can sign up at the pool desk.
