Traditional and modern Indigenous fashion the focus of an event in Cochrane next week

Indigenous fashion through the ages will be highlighted next Thursday, February 29th in Cochrane — an event spearheaded by Mushkegowuk Health.

Dolores Gull is a traditional healer and cultural practitioner with Mushkegowuk Health. She says a fashion show will display traditional, right through to modern indigenous designs, including those by two-spirited people.

Gull says she was surprised when people told her they thought you had to be in a ceremony to go to one.

“This is one of the main, big reasons why we want to do this show,” she explains, “to teach about the ceremonies, different rites of passage, the powwows, why people wear the regalia…”

Gull notes that one presenter is Mark Carpenter. He will talk about the sacred long hair of indigenous men.

“Our long hair was cut off when there was a residential school, and how he’s going to be doing a teaching on that.”

The showcase is at 2:30pm Thursday at the Apitisawin gym. Two buses from Timmins will bring people to Cochrane for the event.
