Cochrane, February, 1974: Snowmobiler falls down well; plans for new hospital

We’re looking this week, in our Cochrane history feature, at happenings 50 years ago, in February, 1974.

The Northland Post of February 21st had a story about Jack Jourdain’s snowmobile falling down a well, with him on it.

He hoisted himself out of the well, but it took a block and tackle to retrieve the machine.

They story said Jourdain emerged with nothing more than a wet dignity.

The previous week, the Northland Post reported on drawings for the new Lady Minto Hospital being reviewed by the building planning committee.

The drawings did not represent a stereotypical hospital design.  Instead, the proposed  layout took into account input from hospital staff and patients.

The story adds that within the following month, the committee would finalize the plan and present it to the provincial health ministry for approval.

Thanks to the Cochrane Public Library for its continuing support of our weekly history feature.
