‘Winter Classic’ in Porquis precedes second Scottie & Devo Hockey Tournament

Two more teams are being added to the second annual Scottie and Devo Charity Hockey Tournament in Iroquois Falls in March. That brings it to ten.

And in January, an outdoor game or two will be played under the dome in Porquis. Organizer Adam Boucher says it’s intended to generate some buzz for the tournament.

“The Winter Classic we’re going to call it like the NHL,” he says, “they have outdoor games every year, they call them the Winter Classic, so I figured ‘might as well follow suit.’”

Scottie McKinnon and Devon “Devo” Lachance were two young Iroquois Falls natives who died of opioid overdoses. Boucher says last year, the tourney split $1,500 between Camp Bickell and KidSport; and gave $1,000 to the Timmins Drug Strategy – all with young people in mind.

“We felt like giving them those opportunities through KidSport and giving a kid a summer camp experience or something like that might help to not push them in that direction, you know?”

The Winter Classic is on January 13th in Porquis.  The tournament is tentatively set for March 16th to 18th.
