Help is on the way to Nellie Lake; Vanthof says hydrologist arrival ‘imminent’

There’s a faint trickle of hope for the two-hundred property owners at Nellie Lake… dealing with the effects of the highest water level most have ever seen.

Timiskaming-Cochrane MPP John Vanthof says he’s spoken to natural resources minister Graydon Smith. He tells him a hydrologist is being sent in to determine the best way to lower the lake without causing more environmental damage.

“I’m not an expert in this,” Vanthof comments, going on to say “I don’t think you can lower the level that quickly with a pump. If you’re thinking of a foot of water or two feet of water, that’s a lot of water to move on an expanse like Nellie Lake.”

Vanthof says he thinks the arrival of the expert is imminent.

Meanwhile, there’s a good sign about the drinkability of the water.

“The samples that the health unit have taken, the vast majority are still good, and we want to keep it that way.”

Vanthof is hopeful for a level remedy sooner than later.  He says he and the minister have promised to stay in touch on the matter.
