Urgent plea made to ministries to reduce the water level of Nellie Lake

Home and cottager owners around Nellie Lake are calling on the natural resources and environment ministries to act NOW, to save them from shore erosion and damage to their buildings.

The spring water level is the highest that longtime Nellie Lakers have ever seen.  Some basements are flooded, and water in the crawl space under Louise Eddy’s family cottage is getting dangerously close to floor level.

Eddy tells My Cochrane Now Dot Com that the community has enlisted MPP John Vanthof to help.

“Nellie Lake is a kettle lake. There’s water pouring in, no outlet,” she says. “There were outlets in the past. Now with landscaping, development, etc., what’s happened to those outlets?”

“It means that we need to apply to the MNRF, but we need it done now. It can’t be a process where we make application now and two months from now we get approval. We need it done yesterday.”

Power boat owners are being asked to stay off the lake, to avoid adding to the problem with the waves their watercraft make. Cameron’s Beach has announced that its boat launch will stay closed for now.
